Choosing the right size
The following size guide will help you choose the right suitcase size based on the length of your trip and your personal packing needs. This way, you can quickly find out whether a compact carry-on suitcase is sufficient for a short trip or whether you’d be better off opting for a medium-sized or large model for longer journeys.
What are the maximum permitted dimensions?
The 158 cm rule sets the maximum permitted size for checked-in luggage on flights. This does not refer to a single edge length, but to the so-called circumference. This is calculated as the sum of the suitcase’s width, height and depth. In practical terms, this means: you measure your suitcase along its three external dimensions (including wheels and handles) and add these values together. The result must not usually exceed 158 cm for the suitcase to still be accepted as standard checked-in luggage. If this measurement is exceeded, the luggage may be classified as bulky luggage depending on the airline and incur additional charges.
| Suitcase size | Duration of trip | Suitcase height | Volume | Hand luggage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Suitcase size S | Up to 3 days | 50–55 cm | 35–50 L | Yes |
| Suitcase size M | Up to 7 days | 60–69 cm | 50–80 L | No |
| Suitcase size L | 1–2 weeks | 70–79 cm | 80–100 L | No |
| Suitcase size XL | 2–3 weeks | from 80 cm | 100–140 L | No |
Choosing the right size and capacity for a suitcase
The duration and type of trip determine how much luggage you’ll need. Do you need a small suitcase for a short break or one that meets specific airline dimensions (hand luggage), a medium-sized suitcase, or a spacious suitcase to take on a long-haul trip? Then you’ll find a wide selection of suitcases in sizes S, M and L in our Koffer24 shop.
Which material is best for a suitcase?
Suitcases are made from a variety of materials. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages and should be chosen to suit the purpose of your trip:
- Hard-shell suitcases
are particularly sturdy and robust. They are therefore ideal for air travel and long-haul trips.
- Soft-shell suitcases are lighter and more flexible than hard-shell suitcases. They can therefore be stowed away to save space and are also ideal for short trips and weekend getaways.
With sustainable suitcase models, special attention is paid to materials that are energy-efficient to produce and can be recycled quickly.
Suitcases with wheels and handles
Of course, suitcases without wheels are still available, but those with wheels – known as trolleys – are more common and considerably more comfortable. To ensure your suitcase supports you perfectly on the go, opt for one with smooth-rolling wheels, an ergonomic handle and a lockable telescopic handle. You can choose between a trolley with two wheels or one with four wheels. The advantage of two wheels is that these suitcases are particularly easy to pull on uneven surfaces and, thanks to the two fixed feet, cannot roll away even on sloping ground. A model with four wheels, on the other hand, is more manoeuvrable and also offers the advantage that you can comfortably push it alongside you instead of having to pull it behind you.
What features should a suitcase have?
Many suitcases feature practical features that provide you with optimal support on your journey. These practical details include, for example:
- Suitcases with an integrated TSA® lock: This is a special security lock for luggage that is permanently fitted to the suitcase and protects its contents. A customisable code grants access to the inside of the suitcase.
- Suitcases with an integrated ID tag: If your suitcase gets lost whilst travelling, it can be located via the ID tag.
- Suitcases with internal packing straps: These allow you to organise and secure larger items of clothing so that they do not fall onto the rest of the contents when the suitcase is opened.
- Suitcases with compartmentalised design: Many suitcases feature compartments with padded dividers and pockets in the upper section or at the base of the suitcase. This allows you to organise all your belongings perfectly.
- Suitcases with a laptop compartment: A dedicated compartment for your laptop keeps things tidy and also protects your delicate device from shocks.
- Suitcases with removable laundry bags: Whether for clean or dirty laundry – removing individual laundry bags gives you flexibility and allows you to use them directly in the hotel wardrobe.
- Suitcases with an external zipped compartment: This is where you can store items that need to be quickly to hand without having to open the whole suitcase.
Children’s suitcases for the little ones
