Even as a child, Benjamin, the founder of Got Bag, noticed how much plastic waste there was on the beach and in the sea. Upon closer investigation, he realised that single-use bottles, bowls, ropes, etc. do not disappear from the water even after several hundred years. They pose a huge threat to the marine environment. A solution was needed, and so the idea of making rucksacks from ocean plastic was born. With the development of the world’s first plastic-free rucksack in 2016, this goal was achieved. Since then, the company Got Bag has made it its mission to actively combat the ongoing pollution of the oceans.

Communication is important

The fishermen working with Got Bag as part of the clean-up programme have become a vital part of the mission. Not only do they actively help keep the seas clean, they also pass on their knowledge. They tirelessly share information about plastic waste, thereby raising environmental awareness in their communities – an effort that, with a network of around 2,000 fishermen, is likely to have a significant impact. The local government is happy to support the initiative and is in close contact with Got Bag. Together, they are seeking long-term solutions for the protection of the oceans.

Collecting Ocean Impact Plastic

Got Bag takes its mission seriously and has launched a clean-up programme in Demak, on the north coast of Java in Indonesia. A network of around 2,000 fishermen collects plastic as by-catch from the sea. Got Bag requires between 1.5 and 5 kg of plastic for each product. That amounts to 50 tonnes per month. Naturally, as part of this programme, care is taken to ensure that not only the plastic required for production is collected from the oceans. All other types of plastic are also recycled, thereby gradually ridding the sea of materials that do not break down naturally.
