The company Vaude was founded in 1974 by Albrecht von Dewitz. Behind this lay a personal passion for mountaineering. In the early 1970s, the word ‘outdoor’ was not yet in common use in German, and the founder therefore found himself constantly on a laborious quest for high-quality and practical mountaineering equipment. This personal experience revealed to him the untapped potential in the field of outdoor equipment. Without further ado, he founded the company Vaude. Incidentally, the name stands for the initials of the founder’s surname, v.D., and is pronounced ‘Faude’. Over the years, what started as a small one-man business grew into one of Europe’s leading mountaineering brands. In 2009, there was a change in leadership when Albrecht handed the company over to his daughter, Antje von Dewitz. Vaude now sells rucksacks and bags, as well as sportswear and accessories.
