Spectacular nature

Arizona is hard to beat when it comes to diversity: mountains, plateaus, deserts and volcanic ranges, as well as 13 unique habitats, each with its own environment, flora and fauna. The Sonoran Desert, for example, is the only place on Earth where the legendary saguaro cactus grows. The significant differences in altitude between the individual regions contribute to this incredible diversity. With countless opportunities to experience nature up close, Arizona is an outdoor paradise that guarantees unforgettable adventures with its fascinating canyons, vast pine forests, blue lakes, snow-capped mountain peaks, raging white-water rivers and even sandy beaches.

Fascinating cultures

There are currently 22 tribal nations – each with its own history and customs – living within the borders of Arizona. Native Americans continue to shape the history and daily life of the state and are an important part of the Grand Canyon State’s vibrant culture. The “Old West” also lives on throughout the state. Before Arizona was founded, the territory was home to some of the most feared outlaws and respected lawmen. Even today, visitors can experience the authentic Wild West in many places, which is still very much alive, with countless historic hotels, museums, quaint shops, cowboy ranches and more.

Fantastic starry skies

A state synonymous with sunshine and blue skies can be just as spectacular when darkness falls. For where nature is so unspoilt and vast, the sea of stars is ever so close. Whilst Flagstaff in northern Arizona was designated the world’s first Dark Sky Place back in 2001, Arizona is now home to seven so-called Dark Sky Communities and 12 Dark Sky Parks, all of which have been recognised for their exceptionally starry nights. The most famous of these areas is Grand Canyon National Park, but this natural wonder is not the only paradise for stargazing.

The five regions of Arizona

Arizona is divided into five diverse regions. Whilst the north, with its dense pine forests and plateaus, offers four distinct seasons, North Central Arizona charms visitors with its red rocks and the lush wine-growing region of the Verde Valley. The desert landscapes of Central Arizona around the Phoenix metropolitan area bring year-round sunshine, which is why the area is rightly known as the Valley of the Sun. The south is home not only to characteristic cactus landscapes, but also stands for a vibrant history and culture and authentic Wild West adventures. It is also home to two of Arizona’s three wine-growing regions: Willcox and Sonoita, one of the first wine regions in the USA. Finally, Arizona’s so-called West Coast along the Colorado River surprises visitors with stretches of beach and plenty of water-based fun.

Breathtaking national parks

In addition to 19 national monuments and 33 state parks, Arizona is home to three unique national parks that could not be more different: the legendary Grand Canyon National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the state’s iconic landmark, is of course an absolute must-see on any first trip to Arizona. But just as impressive is Petrified Forest National Park in eastern Arizona, one of the largest collections of petrified trees and Fossils from the Triassic period, dating back 211 to 218 million years. Incidentally, the park lies directly on the legendary Route 66. In the south of the state, near Tucson, lies the vast Saguaro National Park, which protects the characteristic giant cacti of the Sonoran Desert, which can reach a height of 15 metres and live for over 200 years .

Route 66 in Arizona

Arizona is not only known for the unique Grand Canyon, breathtaking landscapes, Wild West adventures and mesmerising starry skies, but is also home to the longest stretch of the original Route 66 and one of the most beautiful sections of the ‘Mother Road’. Small towns such as Oatman, Kingman, Hackberry and Seligman, through which Arizona’s Route 66 winds its way, still preserve the nostalgia of this legendary road to this day. Countless quirky attractions and souvenirs, neon signs, historic restaurants and motels along the route promise a legendary road trip.
